From time to time, we invite guest teachers who are visiting Singapore or our very own teachers to share their teachings on a themed topic. Normal fees are usually charged for these classes.

Director of Teacher Trainings for Wanderlust Joan Hyman, will be coming back to KPY on 6-7 November 2018.

Why do we love Joan? She has a warm personality and her grounded teaching style creates space for students to deepen their personal journey. Joan’s teachings come from an organic and intuitive place, as she draws upon the study of Ashtanga and Iyengar, Ayurveda, and meditation. With over 20 years of experience leading retreats, trainings, and workshops worldwide, Joan collaborates with teachers who are experts in their field of study with the goal to create an eclectic training program for students at any level.

Understand the Shoulder Girdle Through Asana

Healthy shoulders make for better inversions and add more longevity to our practice. With the multiple downward dogs and chatarungas of your daily vinyasa practice, your shoulders can be vulnerable to injury over time. Learn how to use props and alignment cues to better understand how to stabilise your shoulders, helping you access other postures and prevent impingement. This workshop will start with a lecture pointing out the bones and muscles that make up the shoulder girdle and teach you how to move safely from your shoulder blades while protecting the vulnerable muscles like your rotator cuffs. We’ll then move into a shoulder-focused asana practice, which will include inversions and some backbends. You’ll learn ways to work with a strap that will help you understand how to externally rotate your shoulders, creating stability in this joint and reducing injury. See how specific alignment cues can help you access other postures like backbends and inversions safely by looking at bodies and seeing the movement of the shoulder blades. Practice and learn at the same time while creating a sustainable safe yoga practice!

Hands on Adjustments & The Art of Looking at Bodies

* More suited for teachers as this is a teacher continuing education workshop

Adjust your students with confidence and optimise their experience in the poses by refining your touch skills. Learn how to better read and assess body language using the basic techniques of applying safe and practical hands-on adjustments as well as verbal and energetic adjustments. By focusing on how the poses work on different body types and you will explore several asanas in partner work. Learning how to assist and support others improves your own practice in the process.

Healing Your Lower Back Through Yoga

Learn how to heal your low back through yoga postures that build strength in your legs and core to support your sacrum. The sacrum is the key to stability in the lower back. It is the fulcrum point in our bodies from which all movement happens. If the surrounding muscles are not stable, the ligaments and joints in the lower back will be stressed. In this workshop, you will learn about the muscles and bones surrounding the low back area and evaluate the standing poses and core exercises needed to build strength here. Hip openers and breath awareness adds to the healing by pacifying the low back so your students leave feeling free of low back pain and gain the tools to help them stay there!

What it’s about:

Our body is made up of two-third fluids. Ride the tides and waves of our fluids as the buoyancy of our internal organs as a support structure. Moving through the fluids, we ´feel´ our movement, with a more introspective softer quality that can help us reconnect with an inner strength.

Delving into inquiries such as when can we be supported from a softness that emanates from within? At which point does the body-mind transform or transcend held beliefs?  How do we find balance between rest and activity? Through a dance with our fluids, we open to the flow between our unconscious and conscious mind.

Daphne

As a yoga therapist, a movement educator and bodyworker, Daphne has been practising yoga for the last two decades in a multitude of yoga styles and movement disciplines. She is trained in the art of Traditional Thai Yoga Massage, Biodynamic Cranial Sacral Therapy, Chi Nei Tsang (TCM Abdominal Detox Massage), Tai Chi Massage and Reiki, all of which she infuses into the alchemy of her integrated bodywork and evidence-based yoga therapy. Daphne incorporates a heart-centred approach with a solid foundation in biomechanics, breath work, somatic practices and hands-on techniques. She also melds insights from yoga philosophy, neuroscience, and subtle anatomy within her practice. Her therapy sessions, classes, workshops, and trainings are known to focus on breath, mindfulness, and embodiment to create the moment-to-moment balance in nurturing the body, mind and spirit.
