About a message for beginners | for men | testimonials | media

Yoga is often seen by men as a "women's exercise" because they are "naturally more flexible". Further, men often say, "I can't come to yoga because I am so stiff". Well, the truth is that within a few sessions, even the stiffest student, regardless of gender, will soon find a flexibility they never knew they had. Yoga is about becoming flexible - not something exclusively for the "already flexible". Yoga is an extraordinary style of exercise that will build your core body strength and in the process make your body more flexible.

If you regularly play other sports such as tennis, squash or football, you will find that yoga will help improve your strength, dexterity and improve your breathing. Beyond the benefits that yoga will give your other sports, yoga provides numerous benefits to you as you age. We all get more inflexible as we age and slow down however yoga can significantly reduce the rate at which your body seizes up.

Men tend to be more competitive on the sports field and may find that yoga poses a more obscure type of challenge to traditional sports. With yoga the challenge is all about your own performance. Yogis encourage students to leave their egos at the door but that does not mean you leave the challenge at the door. A yoga session can be gentle and calming; it can also be vigorous, tough and a downright boot camp. The joy of yoga is that it includes such a wide variety of styles that there is almost certainly something to suit everyone.

If you have contemplated yoga but you have been put off trying it because of the misconceptions laid out above, why not come to one of Kate's classes on the east coast of Singapore and see for yourself what an extraordinary experience yoga can be.
